How to use trends from other markets to choose what to sell on MercadoLibre

What to watch in Europe, the US, China and South Korea to find product ideas, and how to check on MercadoLibre whether there's really room before you buy stock.

Read in Español · Português

Plenty of products that sell on MercadoLibre today were a hit somewhere else first. Watching what takes off abroad is a good source of ideas. But that's all it is: a source of ideas. Something selling in Seoul or New York doesn't tell you whether it'll sell in your country.

In this guide you'll see what to watch in each market and how to check on MercadoLibre whether there's room before you invest.

Why watch other markets

Some products get popular in one market and then show up in others. It happens with gadgets, beauty products and seasonal items. If you spot them early, you can get there before the catalog fills up with sellers.

That said, there's no fixed timeline. A product can take months to arrive, arrive in a different form, or never arrive at all. Some products don't work locally because of price, climate, local habits, or because importing them doesn't pay off. That's why an idea from abroad always gets validated locally.

The 4 markets to watch

1. Europe: the season that just ended

Seasons in the Northern Hemisphere are the reverse of the Southern Hemisphere's. The European summer (June to August) ends months before summer starts in Argentina, Chile, Uruguay or southern Brazil. What sold there during their season can give you clues for yours.

A caveat: this works for Southern Hemisphere countries, like those in the Southern Cone. Mexico is in the Northern Hemisphere and has the same seasons as Europe, and Colombia or Venezuela barely have seasons, so the comparison doesn't hold there.

What to watch:

  • Amazon best-seller lists in Spain, France or Germany, by category
  • Seasonal products (beach, garden, cooling, outdoor) whose season just ended there

2. The United States: where the agenda gets set

A lot of what goes viral on social media starts in the US market.

What to watch:

  • Amazon Best Sellers and Movers & Shakers (the biggest climbers in the sales rankings)
  • What's moving on TikTok Shop
  • Product Hunt, if you're into gadgets and tech

3. China and Douyin: where viral products are born

Douyin is the Chinese version of TikTok and has its own shopping built into the app. Many products go viral there, and what takes off in China often shows up later on AliExpress and at factories that sell abroad.

What to watch:

  • Products that keep showing up in Douyin videos (some accounts translate them)
  • Best sellers on Pinduoduo and Taobao
  • New arrivals on 1688, the Chinese wholesale platform for the domestic market

4. South Korea: beauty and lifestyle

Korea sets trends in skincare, makeup, accessories and lifestyle items. K-beauty has been around for years and keeps launching new products every season.

What to watch:

  • What sells on Coupang, one of Korea's largest marketplaces
  • K-beauty trends on social media
  • Korean accessories and lifestyle items

The step you can't skip: validate on MercadoLibre

An idea from abroad tells you "this might work." MercadoLibre tells you what the market looks like locally. Before you buy stock, check:

  1. Whether there's already a catalog. Search for the product on MercadoLibre in your country. How many listings are there? Is there a catalog product with a buy box?
  2. Who sells it. Many sellers or just a few? Are they big sellers with a high reputation?
  3. At what price. The local selling price tells you whether, after your purchase cost, importing, selling fees and shipping, there's anything left for you.
  4. Whether people search for it. MercadoLibre publishes the most popular searches of the week for each country.

Few listings can be an opportunity or a sign that nobody's looking for it. That's why it pays to cross-check all four points instead of relying on just one.

How to do it with Ficanaz

Doing all this by hand takes time: browsing sites in other languages, translating, searching for every idea on MercadoLibre. Research helps you shorten that path, always keeping what the AI proposes separate from what MercadoLibre measures.

1. Pick the "Not here yet" focus

In Research, you type a product or a category, choose the country and pick the "Not here yet" focus: products that are doing well abroad and barely listed locally. Tap "✨ Research with AI" and the AI proposes 8 ideas, explaining for each one which market it saw it in and why it could work in yours.

2. Add "Inspired by"

Under "Refine (optional)" you'll find "Inspired by", with four options: Europe, United States, China / Douyin and South Korea. It steers the ideas toward what's doing well in that market. For Europe, for example, the AI takes into account which season you're in and which one just ended there.

It's a hint for the AI, not a measurement: Ficanaz doesn't measure sales in Europe, the US, China or Korea. The AI searches the web and leaves you the sources it checked so you can review them.

3. Look at what MercadoLibre measures

Every idea has two blocks, kept apart on purpose:

  • Measured on MercadoLibre: comes from the MercadoLibre API and is dated. Products in the catalog, the price of the lowest offer when MercadoLibre has one, whether the term is among the week's searches, and what's required to list it (category, required attributes, photos). With your account connected, it also shows whether you already sell something similar. Measurement works in 8 countries: Argentina, Mexico, Chile, Colombia, Brazil, Uruguay, Peru and Venezuela. Anywhere else, the run is marked as AI only.
  • The AI says: why it could work, audience, differentiators, estimated purchase cost and sources. It's an opinion, and it's labeled as one.

With the "Not here yet" focus, it's normal to see few listings in the catalog: that's exactly what you're looking for. What you have to decide is whether that's an opportunity or a lack of demand.

4. Validate the one you like best

If an idea makes sense to you, pick the "Validate my idea" focus and type in that product. First it gets measured on MercadoLibre, and then the AI gives its opinion on what was measured: a traffic light (Worth it, With changes, Not worth it as is), the reasons why and the risks. If you enter the price you plan to sell at, it also tells you what it thinks of that price against what was measured on MercadoLibre.

5. Look for suppliers and save

Every idea comes with links to Alibaba and 1688 with the search already set up. They're a search, not a chosen supplier: you settle the real price with the supplier. Save the ideas you like to Favorites, and compare up to 3 side by side.

What it costs: Research uses AI, so it uses credits. Before you run it, the button shows the usual cost and "up to N credits," which is the most you'll be charged. Favorites, PDF and Excel don't use credits.

Tips to get the most out of it

1. Combine market and category

Don't search for "everything that's hot in Europe." Pick a category (home, beauty, pets) and a market for inspiration. The ideas come out more specific.

2. Don't copy: adapt

A product that sells at a certain price in the US won't necessarily do the same in your country. Think about the local price, shipping, a listing description in the local language and what sets it apart from what's already out there.

3. Each market for what it does best

China tends to bring gadgets and impulse buys. Europe, seasonal products. The US, general trends. Korea, beauty and lifestyle. It's a guideline, not a rule.

4. Start small

Even if the numbers work on paper, keep your first purchase small. Sell, see how the listing performs, and only then scale up.

Bottom line

Watching other markets helps you find ideas before your competitors do. But the decision gets made with what's happening locally: whether there's a catalog, who's selling, at what price and whether people are searching for it. The AI proposes; MercadoLibre measures.
