How to sell on MercadoLibre in 2026: a complete beginner's guide
A step-by-step guide to start selling on MercadoLibre in 2026: how to pick a product, which costs to add up before you set a price, how to build listings and how to grow with data.
MercadoLibre is one of the largest marketplaces in Latin America, operating in Argentina, Mexico, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela, among other countries. If you want to sell online in the region, it's hard to stay off it. But listing whatever you have and waiting isn't enough.
In this guide I'll walk you through how to start the right way, without losing money on products that don't sell.
1. Pick the right product (before you list anything)
The most common beginner mistake is listing the first thing that comes to mind. "I'll sell phone cases because everyone has a phone." True, and there are also thousands of sellers offering phone cases.
What you need to evaluate before picking a product:
- Demand: are people searching for it? Does it show up among popular searches? Do the existing listings have sales and reviews?
- Competition: how many sellers offer it? Are they big sellers with a strong reputation? Is there a catalog product with a buy box?
- Price: what does it sell for today? At that price, after selling fees, shipping and taxes, is there anything left for you?
- Logistics: is it easy to ship? Is it fragile? Is it heavy or bulky?
- Timing: does it sell year-round or is it seasonal?
How to research it
You can do it by hand: search for the product on MercadoLibre in your country and look at how many listings there are, who's selling, at what price and what buyers are asking.
You can also use Ficanaz Research. You type in a product or a niche, pick the country, and the AI suggests 8 ideas. Each idea keeps two things apart:
- Measured on MeLi: comes from MercadoLibre and is dated. Products in the catalog, the lowest offer price when MercadoLibre has one, whether the term is among the week's searches, and what MercadoLibre requires for you to list it (category, required attributes, photos).
- The AI says: why it could work, audience, differentiators, estimated purchase cost and sources. It's an opinion and it's labeled that way.
If you already have a product in mind, the "Validate my idea" approach measures it on MercadoLibre first, and then the AI weighs in on what was measured: worth it, with changes, or not worth it as is, with the reasons and the risks.
Ficanaz won't give you a score or a made-up margin: MercadoLibre doesn't publish how much another seller's product sells, and what you keep depends on your costs. That math is yours to do (step 2 shows you how).
2. Work out your real costs
A lot of new sellers only look at the product cost and the selling price. They forget everything else.
Costs you need to include:
| Item | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|
| Product cost | What you pay the supplier |
| Freight from the supplier | If you import, international shipping; if you buy locally, getting it to you |
| Taxes | Import duties and taxes, depending on your country and the product |
| MercadoLibre selling fee | Depends on the country, the category and the listing type |
| Shipping to the buyer | Based on weight, size and shipping method |
| Packaging | Box, bag, filler, label |
Selling costs vary by country and category, and MercadoLibre updates them. Before you set a price, check the current costs in MercadoLibre's Help section for your country.
A rule of thumb (not an exact formula):
Minimum selling price ≈ (landed product cost × 2) + selling fee and shipping
Hypothetical example: if the product costs you $12 landed in your warehouse (freight, taxes and packaging included), this rule says you wouldn't sell below about $24 plus the selling fee and shipping. It's a starting point so you don't sell at a loss, not a recommended price. The full math, step by step, is in how to calculate your profit margin.
3. Find reliable suppliers
Alibaba
- Look for suppliers with "Trade Assurance" (Alibaba's payment protection)
- Order samples before placing a large order
- Negotiate price and terms
- Check the MOQ (minimum order quantity)
1688.com (for experienced sellers)
It's the Chinese wholesale site for the domestic market, part of the same group as Alibaba. Prices tend to be lower, but it's in Chinese and generally doesn't sell directly overseas: you'll need an agent or a middleman.
Local suppliers
Don't rule out local suppliers. You skip importing, long lead times and currency risk, and you can restock faster.
In Research, every idea includes links to Alibaba and 1688 with the search already set up. They're a place to start: you're the one who settles on the supplier and the real price.
4. Create listings that sell
A good MercadoLibre listing has:
A clear title
- The words a buyer would use to search for it
- The features that matter: material, size, color, quantity
- Example: "Adhesive Silicone Cable Organizer for Desk, Pack of 3"
Good photos
- A main photo that follows MercadoLibre's rules (in many categories, a white background)
- Several photos: the product in use, its actual size, the details and the packaging
A complete spec sheet
- Fill in every attribute the category asks for: that's what the search filters use
- If the product exists in MercadoLibre's catalog, consider listing it in the catalog
A useful description
- The main benefit up top
- Features and dimensions
- What's included, the warranty and how shipping works
5. Take care of shipping and your reputation
Shipping weighs heavily on the buying decision. MercadoLibre shows the shipping cost and delivery time on every listing, and in many countries it offers Mercado Envios, including Full (your product is stored in a MercadoLibre warehouse) where it's available.
Tips:
- Check the free shipping rules in your country: in many cases they depend on the product's price
- Ship on time: delays hurt your reputation
- Answer questions fast: a buyer with doubts moves on to another listing
Your reputation (the color-coded thermometer) depends on claims, cancellations and late shipments, among other things. Protecting it from your very first sale saves you trouble later.
6. Grow with data, not gut feeling
Once you have sales, use the data to decide:
- Which listings need attention: the ones running out of stock, the ones with claims, the ones that aren't selling
- What you keep from each sale: revenue minus what MercadoLibre charges you
- Which products to add: research related categories and complementary products
- Where to improve: read the questions and reviews (they're your buyers' objections)
Ficanaz for your MercadoLibre account
You connect your MercadoLibre account in one click, using MercadoLibre's official authorization, and Ficanaz works on your real data.
- My listings: the "What to look at first" strip tells you what needs attention (what's running out of stock, what's active with no stock, what has claims and what hasn't sold in 30 days), without spending credits. Each listing has its own page with what MercadoLibre measures and its 90-day trend. If you want, you can ask the AI "What to do with this listing" or for product ideas and copy improvements based on questions and reviews.
- Sales: your sales by day or by SKU with the contribution, meaning revenue minus fees and shipping. It doesn't include product cost, because Ficanaz doesn't know it: you add that part.
- Promotions: the Promotions Center shows which offer sets the price of each listing, along with its stock and sales pace, and lets you accept, adjust or remove many at once.
- Assistant: a chat that reads your account (listings, price, stock, sales, questions, messages and claims) and answers with your numbers. If you give it permission, it also proposes changes: prices, stock, listings, promotions, answers to questions and more. It shows you the before and after, you confirm, and when MercadoLibre allows it, it rereads the listing to check that the change went through. It never deletes listings.
- Ficanaz Link (Pro plan, US$9.99 per month): the Assistant inside Claude or ChatGPT, with the same permissions.
What it costs: the app is free, and only the features that use AI consume credits. When you confirm your email you get 300 credits. AI buttons show you up front the usual cost and "up to N credits", which is the most you'll be charged.
Mistakes that will cost you money
- Picking based on personal taste: "I like it, so it'll sell" isn't data
- Not adding up every cost: selling fees, shipping and taxes change the result
- Competing on price alone: if lots of well-rated sellers already offer the product, find something that sets you apart before cutting the price
- Buying too much stock up front: start small and scale based on what your sales show you
- Neglecting your reputation: a rough patch of claims or delays costs you visibility and sales
Conclusion
Selling on MercadoLibre in 2026 is still a great opportunity to build a business in Latin America. The key is to pick the right product, run the numbers before you invest, and make decisions based on what MercadoLibre measures, not on gut feeling.
